'By the Book'

: Procrasturbating

Having done a degree in Media Production; TV and Radio at University, I majored in writing Radio Drama/Comedy. In all honestly, I have barely given any thought to my degree since leaving Uni this past summer, but in the last week or so, have had an idea for a Radio Comedy, or potentially, TV. I thought I would post the basic idea on my blog, and see what sort of feedback, if any, I received.

It would be called 'By the Book', and would be poking fun at stupid, and out-dated laws, which still exist within Britain, and maybe the whole World. Like for example, did you know it is illegal to die inside the houses of parliament? I wouldn't imagine the dead body would be thrown in a cell to rot as punishment? Also, a pregnant woman can 'relieve' herself wherever she needs too, including, if she so wishes, inside a policeman's helmet. Now I would love to see a chief constable willingly hand over his helmet, see it get excreted in, and place it back on his head. After all, it is uniform.

The comedy would focus on a small town police force, who given the lack of major crime, spend their days chasing petty thieves. It is a similar idea to the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost film 'Hot Fuzz'. Narrated from the station, we would follow the adventures of the police officers, as they try and clean up the streets of their village, from hugely innocent criminals. The aim would be to make people laugh at how easy it is to do something technically illegal. Crimes that everyone commits for example driving 31mph in a 30 zone, or cycling on the pavement, or accidently posting a stamp upside down, or wrong side of an envelope, would be included.

Let me know what you think. At the moment it is just a basic idea, but I hope I can develop it into something quite funny!

Looks like fun; Simon has got himself all busy, but the BBC would still probably accept a pitch for someone else, although I can see this working well with Pegg. Not that you suggested that, only that the idea was a bit 'Hot Fuzz', but as a vehicle for a young comedy team - nice idea. Chuck in some corrupt Social Workers and it can have a Dickensian quality..
