Following Gordon Brown's resignation as Labour leader after losing the general election, the party have now, just about, elected his successor. The closest leadership vote ever, ended up going down to 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th choice votes, to finally decide Labour's new leader. Ultimately, it was Ed Miliband, who narrowly defeated brother David, to become the direct opposition, to Prime Minister David Cameron.
David Miliband, who was foreign secretary when Brown was in power, has long been touted as a potential Labour party leader. It was therefore a bit of an upset, to see him lose out to his younger brother. Given that I have two younger brothers, I can not even imagine how he must be feeling. I hate losing to either of my brothers on a games console, never mind in an election to be leader, of one of the biggest two political parties in Britain! Today David Miliband stated Ed would be a 'great leader', and having expected to gain power, he is now considering his next move, be it staying in the shadow cabinet, or quitting politics all together.
But it is a fantastic victory for Ed Miliband, who has already promised to 'be his own man', and declared new labour is dead, stating that he will take the party in a new direction. Ed is younger than both Prime Minister David Cameron, and Liberal Democrat leader, and deputy-PM Nick Clegg. His biggest challenge, will be repairing the damage done to Labour's reputation, during Gordon Brown's government. But at least now, the Labour party, at last, know who their leader is, and can rally behind him. Ed Miliband will set his sights on wrestling back voters, who defected from Labour to Conservatives in the May general election, and the long road towards that next election, has already begun.
