After a week of controversy seeing X Factor making the headlines everyday, last night finally kicked off the live shows. The twelve acts put through at the judge's houses stage, and the four extra acts given wild card places, all sung one song live last night, in an extended show with the theme 'number ones'. Lines are now open for viewers to vote for their favourite, with the two acts with the least votes being kicked off tonight. In typical, blockbuster X Factor fashion, tonight's results show also sees performances from last year's winner Joe Mcelderry, and American superstar Usher.
One thing that always surprises me each year, is how over the top, and dramatic, the X Factor is. From the huge sets and routines surrounding the singers, to the glamour shots of each act, flicking their head dramatically at the camera in the VT before coming on stage, all of it is so intense. It would be easy for any of them to crack under the pressure. But last night, all 16 acts coped with the situation well, though some were better than others.
For me, the best acts of the night were Mary, Cher, Aiden and Matt. Dannii Minogue would have been the happiest judge, as two members of her boys category, absolutely nailed it. Bookies favourite Matt Cardle, 27, gave a fantastic rendition of Kelly Rowland's 'When love takes over'. Aiden Grimshaw, 23, matched his mate, with a brilliantly professional 'Mad World'. After stunning the country with her first audition, Cher Lloyd flopped at the last round, but controversially made it through. She proved she deserved her place, at her best performing 'Just be good to me'. Finally, Mary Byrne, a 50-year-old Tesco worker, wowed the judges with her performance, 'Its a Man's world'.
The worst kept secret of the year was revealed at the start of the show last night, that four wild card acts would be returning to the show, one from each category. TreyC Cohen (pictured above), in Cheryl's girls category, proved she should have been picked in the original three, with one of the best performances of the night, singing 'One'. Other wild card acts were Wagner, Diva Fever and Paije.
I feel the acts who could be in trouble tonight, are the other three wild card acts, but TreyC should be safe. Also, Storm Lee and John Adeleye, of the Over 28s, could be eliminated. Simon's bands should be through, as should all three of Cheryl's girls. Nicolo Festa, Dannii's third boy, could also be a likely candidate for the chop. The two acts leaving will be announced in tonight's jam packed show.
I'm sure everyone involved with the X Factor, will be delighted the live shows have now begun, and have diverted attention away from Gamugate. Cheryl Cole's decision to not put the Zimbabwean born Gamu through to the live shows, has been blown out of all proportion by British media, and even resulted in the nation's sweetheart recieving death threats. It has since been revealed her decision may have been influenced by Gamu's Visa problems, and her and her family could now face deportation. While obviously it has been a difficult week for the hit show, and judge Cheryl Cole, there is the old saying, any publicity is good publicity.
Last night's first live show was certainly much anticipated, and didn't disappoint. All of the acts gave good accounts of themselves, and whichever two are eliminated tonight, can probably feel hard done too. Cheryl Cole, and everyone involved with the show, will now be hoping the tribulations of the past week are now behind them, and the nation will now be hooked to the show itself, not talking about the controversy it attracts.

I can see it as a game show, (like QI with Stephen Fry), and/or a humorous look at life, "by the book" episodic doco that could include street interviews, catching people out with old by-laws long forgotten but still on the books, and also, comparing different countrys' laws, what is legal in one, not in the other etc.
Nice idea, with possibilities.
Researching somethign years ago, I found it used to be illegal in England to attempt suicide, the penalty for being caught (and unsuccessful of course) was...DEATH BY HANGING!! How bizarre was that eh? In Australia, suicide is still illegal, and punishable by gaol, just the sort of place you would want to put someone in a suicidal depression!
Another one, from Oz; it was legal to urinate against the kerb side rear car tyre, (left down under here) but no longer. I remember doing it as a kid, very embarrassed of course, father impatiently waiting for me and glaring off into the distance!
cheers
